Will China and Chinese sport ever be the same after the Beijing Olympic Games, I wonder?

The ultimate success of China as an organiser of a great world event and a participant that topped the gold medal count and second only to the US in total medals won, will be a massive boost to the nation and is society. Can this sporting success be tranformed into economic and political advantages for China in the future?

It should but the achilles heel of this asian giant is its abysmal human rights record; how can it turn this around? In the short term it will be impossible, but in the long term there will have to be a quantum change in attitude and regard for their fellow countrymen and humans. Like methamphetamine addicts they appear to lack empathy for their fellow countrymen who are not members of the Communist Party, unless there is some chance of political gain. They will also have to change their public attitude towards their political enemies, such as the Falun Gong and Tibetan protesters, within the country as well.

Chinese sportspeople will realise now, if they hadn't before, that there is a definate career path in sport that will keep them from the nightmare of life as automatons in some forsaken factory in provincial China.
