England's tsunami of 1607...

An account of an early natural disaster and the effect it had on the West of England and Wales

The world was horrified by the tsunami that struck Asia several years ago. To most of us, it was the first time we’d heard the word, the first time such a terrifying incident could strike out of the blue, without warning.

An Account from England and Wales:

But it has happened before, many centuries ago near the Bristol Channel in England. The following is based on an account in The Gentleman’s Magazine of 1762, printed in response to a report of a disastrous storm near Quesnoy, France. It quotes extensively from a pamphlet in the Harleian library which was written soon after the event in 1607. It is worth quoting in detail:

“On Tuesday January 27 about 9 in the morning, ‘the sunne being fayrly and bryghtly spred,’ huge and mighty hills of water were seen in the elements, tumbling one over another in such sort as if the greatest mountains in the world had overwhelmed the low vallies, to the inexpressible astonishment and terror of the spectators, who, at first, mistaking it for a great mist, or fog, did not on the sudden prepare to make their escape from it; but on its nearer approach, which came on with such swiftness as it was verily thought the fowls of the air could not fly so fast; they perceived that it was the violence of the waters of the raging seas, which seemed to have broken their bounds, and were pouring in to deluge the whole land, and then happy were they that could fly the fastest. But as violent and swift were the huge waves, and they pursuing one another with such rapidity that in less than 5 hours space, most part of the countries on the Severn’s banks were laid under water, and many hundreds of men, women, and children, perished in the floods. From the hills might be seen herds of cattle, and flocks of sheep, with husbandmen labouring in the fields, all swept away together, and swallowed up in one dreadful inundation. Houses, barns, ricks of corn and hay, were all involved in the common ruin. Many who were rich in the morning were beggars before noon, and several perished in endeavouring to save their effects

Roughed up NZ MP plans to complain for being assaulted by Chinese security in NZ..

From Pete's Kiwi Watch comes this story: http://peteskiwiforum.blogspot.com/

Roughed up New Zealand MP plans to complain - he was assaulted by Chinese security...

Parliament's Speaker will receive complaint from Green MP Russel Norman, who was roughed up by Chinese security as he held Tibet protest

Green MP Russel Norman plans to lay a complaint with Parliament's Speaker after he was roughed up by the Chinese Vice President's security officers.

The party co-leader was waving a Tibetan flag outside Parliament as Vice President Xi Jinping arrived. He was then manhandled by members of Mr Xi's entourage.

Political editor Barry Soper, who witnessed the scene, says the security contingent was very rough with Mr Norman and he describes the incident as "quite extraordinary.

"Chinese security and there are very large numbers of them, roughed (Mr Norman) up in a way that I've never seen a member of Parliament treated. He had the Tibetan flag ripped from him and trampled on by the Chinese security. He was prevented from getting anywhere near the vice president.

"If somebody does want to wave a Tibetan flag, which is clearly offensive to the Chinese and with the flag went Russel Norman chanting 'freedom for Tibet', well, we live in a democracy and should be able to express our views in the way Russel Norman did."

Mr Soper says Mr Norman can probably expect to receive similar treatment if he waves a Tibetan flag in front of the vice-president again.

Do you expect John Key to put a complaint in to the Chinese? Don't be funny! Seriously the Chinese security need to keep their hands to themselves while on NZ soil or water. Their job was to protect the Chinese dignatory. Any New Zealander is quite free to wave a Tibetan flag here in NZ - NZ is a free democratic state that will not be intimidated by the Chinese regardless of any free trade agreements, John Key. I would wave one myself! The Chinese invaded Tibet in the early 50's. Long live Tibet!

From the Green Planet comes the "Singapore in sand grab"...

Cambodia is devastating its coastal areas by dredging vast quantities of sand to export to tiny Singapore for reclamation, a watchdog group has reported recently.

Cambodia has become a prime source of sand used to enlarge Singapore's territory now that several other nations - including Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam - have banned sand exports.

Singapore has reportedly increased its surface area by 20% in recent decades through reclamation. London-based environmental watchdog Global Witness has also noticed that the wealthy island state claims to be a leader on environmental issues. Yeah right. Some people will believe anything!

DO NOT GIVE SIDETICK A TICK.                                 .

Do not give Sidetick a tick, They ripped me off! They don't deserve to be on the internet - a big thumbs down!

First published at Qondio:

I'm really not a negative type, that why I'm always looking at new sites, especially blog and social network sites. I've had a few disabled for a variety of reasons, not usually my fault, in my opinion anyway.

If I allegedly break the TOS of a site, like Adsense for instance, I would appreciate being told the reason - Adsense never has told me. I can only presume I must have unknowingly and inadvertently clicked one of my own adds; if I did I am very remorseful about that. But Google Adsense the power and the glory on the internet didn't want to know. They made THEIR decision. But thats not what I'm actually writing about today, here at KR!

As I said earlier I'm always looking around at new sites. I've joined a couple of social network sites. Most are there for your enjoyment and social interaction - Netlog is a good example of that. Good site to communicate from.

But one day in the latter part of last year i was invited to a new site by one of my good blogging friends. So I signed up and began to navigate my way around the place. They said that this site is a paying site, and you got paid more if you intracted more. And so it appeared for many months. We got credited with Sidetick dollars for getting friends and interacting with them, setting up and participating in polls, writing on my blog, commenting on other blogs, downloading music, videos and games. I even took part in the NFL weekly game selections (despite knowing little about the American game) - football pools. I was earning a potential 3500-5000 Sidetick dollars, or SD's per week .By February of this year I had earned potentially 89,000 SD. 200,000 SD =US$100.00 at payout.

During February Sidetick made a bombshell announcement, which I didn't pickup until Feb 27, my birthday. Only citizens of the US and some obviously friendly countries, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Israel could continue to be allowed to earn money there. The rest of we members were foreigners and couldn't earn anymore. We had all participated and helped Sidetick to grow as a social site for all these months. Now we were being denied the opportunity to continue earning, and as a consequence to be able to have the opportunity to cash out what we may have already earned - in my case about US$45.00.

As a New Zealander and a friend and ally of the United States I was deeply angered and offended to be considered a mere foreigner, on a par with North Korea. I was irate, and sent messages to the Admin and wrote a couple of posts on my blog there. I received a reply which stated they were looking for ways for "foreign" members to continue earning money there.Yeah right! I didn't receive any opportunities to make more than pennies there. So I went on the attack outside of Sidetick! Now I'm not normally a vindictive person, but this kiwi doesn't appreciate being treated in such an unforgetable and off-hand manner - being ripped off!

Sidetick had actually committed offences against a New Zealand citizen and under NZ law would be guilty of false pretences and fraud. They continued to advertise their site without any mention of "two grades" of membership - Americans and buddies, and "foreigners" like me and those from North Korea, Zimbabwe, Iran and Fiji etc. But because they are registered in Atlanta, Georgia, there isn't anything I could do unless I went to Atlanta and took a case against them.

I wasn't surprised that after posting a few articles on various blogsites on the internet my account was disabled. Bully for Sidetick, the rip-off merchants of the internet! Many of my blogging friends are angered by Sidetick's actions, and one has said she will investigate ways within the US system to bring Sidetick to justice. Good for her!
